Oral Pathology

There are many conditions which occur in the mouth, the worst being cancer.  The great majority of lesions are benign (non-cancerous), for example lichen planus (a psoriasis-like condition), fibromas (abnormal growth of scar tissue), and hyperkeratosis (abnormal thickening usually related to chronic trauma).  Many conditions occur painlessly and slowly.  Conditions that do not heal in 2-3 weeks should be examined; not all conditions will require surgery.

Conditions that deserve evaluation are

  • Growing lumps of tissue
  • Areas that are red or white
  • Areas that bleed without cause
  • Jaw swelling
  • Thickened tissues
  • Difficulty swallowing or speaking
  • Persistent sore throat
  • Facial swelling or asymmetry

Evaluations by Dr. Cameron may include biopsy of the tissue, X-rays, CT scans and clinical examination.   Once a diagnosis is made, options for treatment will be presented to the patient.

Early diagnosis and treatment will provide you with a more satisfactory result.
